The best vacation place I've ever been to! - 6/2/2019
I was only here on vacation for about a week or so...

But in this relatively-short span of time, I came to not only love this place, but also adore it. I also adore the state of NC itself for two reasons...1: It has mountains, plus the tallest mountain East of the Mississippi River. It's also steeped in rich history, from the times of the Native Americans, to the time when European Settlers came to the country in the 1500's. But what I really liked about this town was how quiet and secluded it was. It might be to expensive for me to live there now, but it's one of the best places I've ever been to in the United States of North Read More

Greatest kept secret retirement community - 3/13/2011
Lake Lure has a retirement community that has been slowly discovered -
Rumbling Bald Mountain Resort. This small lake area community has beautiful mountain views, friendly neighbors and a charm that few places that we have lived in has ever had.
My wife and I moved there 7 years ago to escape the Florida crowds, crime and rush, rush atmosphere.
We now have amazing friends and neighbors, unbelievable views, lake activities, workout areas, tennis, golf, 3 swimming pools and a safe
place to live without locking your doors and worrying about somebody breaking into your car.
There is always something to do and then there is peace and quiet that is always welcome.
When a couple of friends came to visit us from Florida a few years ago, we took our daily morning walk and the spouse commented on the scent in the air that she couldn't quite figure out what it was, her husband said " It's the fresh air". Sometimes the simple things like good clean air are Read More

The Best in Western NC - 4/23/2010
Hello
My wife and I have lived in Lake Lure in the Hickory full time since 2002. It is in many ways the best kept secret in Western NC. We live in the Rumbling Bald resort at the north end of Lake Lure. In the resort, we have access to the scenery and general fun of crystal clear mountain water. In the summer months, the water is warm at the first 5 - 8 feet and then the temperature drops quickly. You can see your feet in the water when you swim. For a guy who grew up in the Great Lakes part of the country, this was amazing.

Raising children here has always ben tough because the Hickory Nut Gorge sits at the corner of several differtn countiers and therefore not well served We are getting a new charter school in 2010 which will open the Gorge up to new families with with children. On one hand the remote, isolated quality of the Gorge will change, but it will over time, change for the good.
